Frequency of Oral Care Interventions Study

Background: >60% of ICU admissions acquire fatal Ventilator-Associated Pneumonia. Toothbrushing in the critically ill population had never been studied, and therefore was not part of hospital protocol.

Intervention: For four years, I collaborated with interdisciplinary teams to effectively enroll and recruit >300 patients in a double-blind NINR funded randomized control trial to study the effect of toothbrushing in reducing the overwhelming incidence of Ventilator-Associated Pneumonia and reduction of other hospital-acquired infections.
